Chromolithography (colour printing) introduced medieval illumination to a mass market. Owen Jones had pioneered new standards in chromolithography in the 1830s, in the publication of his Alhambra studies. Previously, such sumptuous colouring had only been available to collectors with the means to acquire original medieval manuscripts.
