German Bears
The bear is a very important animal in Germany both in folklore and as a mascot. Many German toy manufacturers continue to make teddy bears.
Gebruder Bing Bear
Gebruder Bing had been making toys since the 1890s. It made its first teddy bear in 1907. The company was famous for its mechanical toys and soon introduced these elements into its bears.
Queen Victoria Bear
This bear is dressed as Queen Victoria. She was made as a limited edition in 2001 to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of Queen Victoria's death.
Schuco Teddy Bear
Schuco was the trade name for Schreyer & Co, a German company founded in 1912. Well-known for its tinplate mechanical toys, Schuco began to make teddy bears in earnest following the First World War.
Steiff Bear
This bear is called Ted. He belonged to a little girl called Muriel who was born in 1901. Muriel gave the bear to her daughter Elizabeth when she was born in 1941. The bear's clothes were made by Muriel's mother, Elizabeth's grandmother, in the 1940s.
Tommy Tittlemouse Bear
Boys and girls throughout the land wanted a teddy for their birthday or for Christmas. One such boy was James Gowan and in 1908, he got his wish. The bear was very small and had probably been made in Germany.
