Community Programme
The V&A Museum of Childhood is situated in Tower Hamlets, one of the most deprived and culturally diverse boroughs in London. In order to better represent the groups of people living in the immediate locality, the museum launched its Community Strategy in 2002. The strategy has now evolved into an extensive programme of outreach projects and events for local audiences in Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham.
Working with local authority and voluntary sector organisations, schools, colleges, community and art centres and cultural interest groups, the museum's collections are used as inspiration for a range of artist-led, participatory visual arts, music and performance-based projects. The projects aim to engage new audiences in a creative process that culminates in something which will in turn be displayed in the museum.
