Warli & Weave
22 November 2008 - 31 May 2009
FREE, Front Room Gallery
Warli painting and Kutch weave, both forms of traditional Indian craft, come together in this unique exhibition, focusing on how children from two rural communities learn and develop skills critical to sustaining livelihood.
Warli & Weave takes as its starting point the personal stories of two nationally recognised Indian craftspeople - celebrated Warli artist Ramesh Hengadi and award-winning Kutch weaver Dayal Vankar - describing how, as children, they first became involved with their craft.
The exhibition explores the enduring qualities of traditional craft as well as how contemporary practice has developed in response to changes in family and community life, along with shifts in local markets and global economics.
Featuring weavings, Warli paintings, artefacts, photographs and film.
