This resources contains a selection of some of the different types of drawings architects produce at different stages of the design process in order to develop and communicate their ideas. Produced in the 1770s to the late 1990s they also demonstrate how architects’ approaches to drawing and techniques have evolved over time.
Development of the Grand Entrance and Dome, 2003
In 2003, the Grand Entrance on Cromwell Road was remodelled by inserting a paved ramp on either side of enlarged steps and the Grand Entrance and Dome was greatly improved making it a brighter, more welcoming arrival point.
Robert Adam: Neo-classical architect and designer
Robert Adam (1728–92) was one of the most important British architects working in the Neo-Classical style. He was a main force in the development of a unified style that extended beyond architecture and interiors to include both the fixed and moveable objects in a room.
Development of the architecture gallery, 2004
The UK’s first permanent architecture gallery opened in November 2004 and features highlights from the world-class collections of the V&A and RIBA. Around 160 architectural models, drawings, designs, material samples and building fragments are displayed.
