Obituary of Sir Edward John Poynter
Sir Edward John Poynter (1836–1919) was an artist and President of the Royal Academy from 1896–1918 and Director of the National Gallery 1894–1905, but he was also a teacher and a lecturer. In 1875 he became Director and Principal of the National Art Training School in South Kensington, a post he held for six years.
Obituary of Sir Henry Cole
Sir Henry Cole (1808–82) worked in public service for over 50 years. He was a major contributor to the development of the Great Exhibition of 1851, and was the first Director of the South Kensington Museum, which was founded as a consequence of the Exhibition and renamed the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1899.
