Memory Maps

Memory Maps is about people and their relationship with place. It is about objects that are associated with particular areas as well as prints and paintings of named locations. But most importantly it is about writing about place. The Memory Maps project is a collaboration between Marina Warner, Professor of Creative Writing and her department at the University of Essex and the V&A. For this reason we have started by focusing on Essex.

The Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon opened in 1879 and produced an annual summer Shakespeare season. When the theatre burnt down in 1926 it was replaced with a new building officially opened on Shakespeare's birthday in 1932. In 1960 the Royal Shakespeare Company was created from the resident company at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre under the direction of Peter Hall.

Early on the morning of the 16th of July, 1837, Clare was led away from his wife and children, by two stern-looking men, who placed him in a small carriage and drove rapidly away southward. Late the same day, the poet found himself an inmate of Dr. Allen's private lunatic asylum, at Fair Mead House, High Beech, in the centre of Epping Forest.

In 1987, as a songwriter and solo performer on the folk music scene in England, I felt the need to find a new theme, something specific and focused... I began an unpublished group of verses about Essex, to be called, I thought, An Essex Guidebook.

A gift in your will

You may not have thought of including a gift to a museum in your will, but the V&A is a charity and legacies form an important source of funding for our work. It is not just the great collectors and the wealthy who leave legacies to the V&A. Legacies of all sizes, large and small, make a real difference to what we can do and your support can help ensure that future generations enjoy the V&A as much as you have.
