Constantine Alexander Ionides on Wikipedia
Constantine Alexander Ionides (14 May 1833, Manchester - 29 June 1900, Brighton) was a major 19th century British art patron and collector of Greek ancestry, the son of the collector Alexander Constantine Ionides. He is best known for his bequest of 82 oil paintings to the Victoria and Albert Museum. He is buried in Hove.

I have been fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to treat one of Britain's national painting collections. My internship in the V& A has allowed me to be involved in a variety of activities and responsibilities related to the collection. Arriving in October 2001, I was fortunate to observe – and indeed participate in – the last (but very hectic!) few weeks of preparation leading to the opening of British Galleries.

Lunette paintings in the National Competition Gallery
The long gallery now known as Rooms 100 and 101 was once the National Competition Gallery, where works by art students from government-run schools across Britain were annually judged and exhibited. The bays around the gallery walls were crowned by 20 large, semicircular paintings illustrating the principles and practices of art education with imagery evoking the highest achievements from the history of art.
