Illustrations for a children's book based on personal loss and dealing with illness. This is a challenging brief to deal with and it was important to approach it in a sensitive way. The brief was to create a book for children that dealt with themes connected to film noir. I initially began sketching dark shapes and shadows which lead on to the creation of the crow. I wanted to use the crow as a metaphor for illness or loss of any kind so that anyone can connect and relate to the characters. I then used this image of the crow to develop a story book for children in which the main character, a little girl, is followed by the crow and tries to overcome the problems that she faces.
I used digital and hand drawn techniques to define my work and enjoyed the challenge of conveying such a difficult topic.
