The Sackler Centre is the V&A's centre for public learning through creative design and the arts, inspired by the Museum and the breadth of its collections. It is one of its most innovative spaces, with:

  • State-of-the art design, digital and art studios for workshops, courses and drop-in programmes
  • Residency studios
  • Seminar rooms for courses, study days and seminars
  • Auditorium for debates, lectures, talks, conferences, live performances and outside broadcasts

Innovative programmes for schools, students, families, young people, adults and local communities are developed upon a unique triangle of resources - the V&A's collections and staff, the expertise of creative professionals, and the skills of our visitors. The Sackler Centre provides a space for debate on the current issues of design and its place in society, alongside opportunities to learn new skills, both digital and traditional.

Everyone has talent. The Centre harnesses that talent - making creativity a force in the lives of current visitors as well as new audiences. Every visitor to the V&A will be given the opportunity to take the knowledge and inspiration they get from our collections, and use it for creative practice in the Centre.

RIBA Awards 2010

The Sackler Centre for arts education at the V&A recently won a prestigious RIBA London 2010 award. In the Arts and Leisure category, architects Softroom won an award for their design of the Sackler Centre. This was one of four accolades for the V&A which included an award for the new Medieval & Renaissance Galleries, the RIBA/Design for London Client of the Year and an English Heritage award for Sustaining the Historic Environment .

David Anderson, Director of Learning and Interpretation at the V&A was "delighted that the Sackler Centre has won one prestigious award and shared others with another V&A project. The Centre is developing an innovative approach to museum learning that is integrated with the work of the whole institution. Softroom were a pleasure to work with. We asked them to collaborate with us and involve audiences and staff in developing the design, which they did with great enthusiasm and skill. The awards are a great tribute to their talents as well as those of the staff and visitors at the V&A who worked with them."
