Kalighat Paintings is the first exhibition to show the V&A’s collection of Kalighat paintings in India.Combining the best examples of the V&A collection with those from the Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata, the works will be exhibited alongside contemporary Kalighat paintings from today’s practising artists. The VMH holds the single largest collection of Kalighat paintings in the world.

Kalighat painting is a specific urban popular painting style that developed in the vicinity of the Kali temple in Kolkata in the mid 19th century. These watercolour drawings, or ‘pats’, mainly originated through the work of professional painters (patuas) from the rural districts of Bengal.
