The British first became accustomed to paintings of mountainous scenery through the popular dramatic work of the 17th century Italian Salvator Rosa. Horace Walpole famously wrote of his journey over the Alps in the 1730s, 'Precipices, mountains, torrents, wolves, rumblings, Salvator Rosa'.
