Romanesque is a modern term describing the art and architecture produced in Western Europe in the period 1000-1200.
The style used the art of the Roman Empire as a principal source of creative inspiration. It also drew upon Scandinavian and Islamic traditions, as well as those of the Christian centres at Jerusalem, Constantinople and Rome. The style was international and can be traced all over Western Europe.
