As she did here, Julia Margaret Cameron often scraped away large segments of collodion from her negatives to alter a composition or remove unwanted figures or damaged areas of emulsion. It is not known why Mrs Cameron made this change to the plate. An alternate print of the same subjects exists in the Lindsay Album which shows no signs of deterioration or technical fault.
