This terracotta pair portrays miniature monkeys, one male, one female. Similar monkeys with equally human-like postures (some playing instruments, masturbating or in sexual intercourse) in other collections led Stein to believe that they imitate human emotions, others believe that they may have fulfilled some amuletic purpose. Whatever their original nature and function, the monkeys are modelled in miniature with great deal of attention being paid to the depiction if their expression and poses.
