Inscribed by the artist at the back in Latin 'At the age of 21' and 'D. Paton made this in Rome' and dated '1674'

This was drawn in Rome and is possibly of Richard Maitland, 4th Earl of Lauderdale (1653-95). We know Paton accompanied Richard's younger brother William on his Grand Tour of Europe. He possibly did the same for Richard.
