Testing for adhesive penetration - 修理材の含浸性の実験

A range of western and Japanese adhesives was tested to assess how well they would penetrate underneath metal foil, and how well they would attach foil to a lacquer surface. In the first stage of testing, twelve adhesives were tested in a range of concentrations and solvents. Glass coverslips were placed on a lacquered board and adhesive was applied to a single point on the edge of each coverslip, enabling comparison of how far each penetrated. This experiment was important because the adhesive would have to penetrate up to 10mm under the loose foil on the Mazarin Chest.

何種類もの西洋と日本の修理材を揃え、金属加飾部の下への含浸性と漆塗膜への接着性を評価する実験を行いました。実験の第一段階では、12種類の修理材を選び、異なった濃度と溶剤により実験を行いました。黒漆塗り板に置いたスライドカバーガラスの一箇所から修理材を含浸し、それぞれの含浸度を比較しました。修理材は剥離した金属加飾部の下10mmまで含浸する必要があるため、その意味でこの実験は重要なものでした。
