Key conservation issues: lifting mother-of-pearl decoration -

This image shows one of the damaged mother-of-pearl roundels from the border decoration of the Mazarin Chest. The damage, like the splitting of the wooden substrate, is the result of fluctuations in RH combined with the materials used to make the chest. In this case, the lacquer (and wooden substrate) beneath the mother-of-pearl expands and contracts as the RH fluctuates at a different rate to the mother-of-pearl. The adhesive used to attach the mother-of-pearl was unable to accommodate this differential movement and eventually failed, leading to lifting, patchy colour saturation and, in some areas, total loss of decoration.
