Rodin came to London in 1881 at the instigation of Legros to meet collectors such as Ionides. During his stay, Legros introduced him to drypoint etching. Rodin made this first ambitious attempt, scratched with a darning-needle, on the back of one of Legros' discarded copperplates. Ionides secured one of only three early proofs, taken before the plate manufacturer's name was erased.
