Flambé vase, China

Flambé vase
China, Jingdezhen
Qianlong reign (1736-95)
Porcelain, with flambé glaze
Museum no. C.397-1910
George Salting Bequest

The vase imitates imperial Jun wares of the Song dynasty (960-1279), which had become highly prized by this time. The deep red glaze with blue streaks was probably created on order of the Yongzheng Emperor (1723-35). Such glazes fascinated French and British art potters of the late 19th century. They are often described as flambé ('flamed').
