Cross section showing the full stratigraphy of the surface structure of the Mazarin Chest -

This is a cross section of one of the samples taken from the Mazarin Chest, viewed under a microscope using UV light. It shows a base layer of indigo-dyed textile (nuno-kise) followed by four layers of foundation (shitaji) made from a mixture of clay and lacquer. The clay in the bottom layer is coarse, while that used in subsequent layers is progressively finer. The uppermost of these four layers was abraded flat, probably with charcoal, residues from which may explain the carbon layer now visible above it. This is the stage at which the mother-of-pearl inlay on the border decoration of the chest would have been applied. This was followed by a coating of fine-grained foundation (shitaji) that brought the surrounding surface up to that of the mother-of-pearl. This final layer of shitaji was polished with charcoal, which again left a film of carbon residue. It is possible that at this point a layer of carbon black, possibly in the form of a sumi ink (soot black mixed with animal glue), was applied before the surface was finished with lacquer (urushi).
