Several areas of the decoration on the Mazarin Chest were analysed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), a technique that reveals which elements are present on the surface of an object. Analysis showed that gold and silver, alone or in combination, were present in all areas decorated with metal powders (maki-e) and metal foil inlay (hyomon and kanagai). The subtle variations of colour and texture characteristic of the maki-e decoration on the Mazarin Chest were achieved by mixing gold and silver powder in different proportions. Observation with the naked eye reveals the use of differing particle shape and size. XRF readings also show the presence of mercury from the cinnabar (mercury (II) sulfide, HgS) that was mixed with the lacquer used to adhere the maki-e powders to the surface, and iron from the iron oxide in the clay component of the foundation (shitaji) layers.

マザラン・チェスト加飾部の数箇所が蛍光X線分析(XRF)されました。この分析方法は対象品の表面にどの元素があるかを明らかにするものです。分析により、蒔絵、平文、金貝の加飾部の全域に、金と銀が単独あるいは混合で見つかっています。マザラン・チェストの蒔絵の色彩と材質感の微妙な違いは金と銀の混合比率をいろいろ調整することにより創出されています。目視観察から、様々な形と大きさの粒子が使われていることがうかがわれます。XRF分析によりさらに、蒔絵の接着に漆と混ぜて使われた辰砂(水銀二酸化硫黄、HgS)の水銀が検出されたほか、下地層の粘土成分の酸化鉄の鉄も検出されました。
