Samuel Holden specialised in illustrating species introduced into private collections from abroad, many of which were later engraved and published in journals such as the Botanical Magazine. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds 128 works by Holden.
This drawing shows a species introduced into Britain. It is an incomplete study of an unidentified gesneriad, a plant native to the tropics.
