Heinrich Campendonk (1889-1957)
'Large Head with Spread Out Hand'
Woodcut hand-coloured with watercolour
Museum no. Circ.108-1964
Heinrich Campendonk was a German printmaker and stained glass artist. After World War One sources such as African art, Egyptian shadow play figures and Russian folk prints all provided sources of inspiration for his woodcuts. In this hand-coloured print the contrast of the almost luminous colours with the strong black outlines recalls Campendonk's interest in stained glass.
