More about Art Deco

Eltham Palace
Off Court Road, Eltham, London, SE9 5QE

Architects: Seely and Paget, 1936-7

In the early 1930s, Stephen and Virginia Courtauld commissioned an exotic and flamboyant Art Deco extension. The fifteenth century Great Hall of the original palace was also restored and used as a sitting room. Features of the house include a vaulted bathroom lined with onyx and gold mosaic, and a dining room with black and silver doors showing exotic birds and animals.

Eltham Palace is managed by English Heritage and opens regularly. For more information call 020 8294 2548 or visit www.english-heritage.org.uk
