This fascination led to the creation of some very striking Art Deco objects such as this screen designed by Irish-born artist Eileen Gray.

Lacquer is the sap of a tree native to East Asia. After various refining processes to remove excess water and impurities lacquer is essentially a colourless, viscous liquid which hardens when exposed to oxygen under hot and humid conditions.
