Africa was one of the richest sources of exotic imagery.

The Deco designers borrowed bold abstract and geometric patterns and the subdued black and brown colour range typical of Central African art.

Derived from the patterns seen on African textiles, shields and sculptures, zig zags, hatch marks, circles and triangles became part of the repertoire of Art Deco motifs.
