India (Murshidabad), 1760-1763
During his career in Bengal, East India Company official
William Fullerton happily adopted aspects of Indian courtly life. This portrait
of Fullerton receiving a visitor depicts him as if he were an Indian prince,
seated on a rich carpet, leaning against a bolster and smoking a hookah. Around
him are a rosewater sprinkler and a box for betel nut and he is attended by
servants with fly-whisks.
