Wallpaper panels depicting Canton
Watercolour on paper
China (Canton), c. 1780

These panels of hand-painted Chinese wallpaper depict Canton, the port in southern China where Europeans were permitted to establish trading factories. The panels illustrate life in the busy port and the western-style buildings erected along the waterfront. In the surrounding countryside the production of two important Chinese exports - porcelain and tea - is also portrayed. This wallpaper was made for the Ladies' Salon at Strathallan Castle, Scotland.
