Environmental design was introduced as a category of the D&AD Awards during the retail boom of the eighties. Next and Nicole Farhi were among the early winners. The focus on fashion retailing reached its peak in 1997 with the spectacular Harvey Nichols windows in Knightsbridge, designed by Thomas Heatherwick. This idea of architecture as advertising - or building as billboard - has gained ground with recent winners such as the Millennium Wheel and the Peckham Library. The London Eye
