Fashion takes its inspiration from science fiction in this ensemble. As space travel became a reality, a spate of TV programmes and films like 'Star Trek','Barbarella' and '2001: A Space Odyssey' explored the idea of dressing for the future. Cardin experiments with this notion in his Cosmos range. It included similar outfits for women, men and children, made from hard-wearing materials.
In this example the cap and tabard are of woollen jersey, with a ribbed wool jumper, the boots and motif are made from vinyl and the sun visor is smoked plastic.
Cardin introduced seamless tights to be worn with short clothes, as they were warmer and more convenient than stockings and suspenders.
