Batik hanging
Designed by Stanley Crosland, 1960s
T.256-1989

Stanley Crosland made large batik wallhangings as well as silk scarves and stoles. The batik design is drawn onto the fabric using wax poured from a metal spout and when it has dried the fabric is dyed. The areas covered with wax resist the dye and retain the original colour of the fabric. Areas of wax are then scraped off the fabric. The process can be repeated several times to dye the fabric with different colours and patterns. Cracks which appear in the wax during the dyeing process give the fabric a marbled texture.
