Sample of indigo
tie-dyed and sewn cotton
Made under the direction of Susan Bosence, 1961
CIRC.104-1962
The white stripes on this indigo-dyed piece are made by sewing the cloth into
gathered rows before dyeing it. Susan
Bosence learnt hand printing and dyeing techniques from the
textile artists Phyllis Barron and Dorothy Larcher. During the 1950s
she developed her own fabrics for clothing and domestic use. From the
1960s she taught textile printing.
