Yellow towelling beach
trousers and jacket
Designed by Foale and Tuffin, London, 1968
T.197:1&2-1991
This bright yellow beach outfit has primary coloured details. Marion Foale and
Sally Tuffin were amongst the first to design trouser suits.
Royal College of Art graduates, they formed a partnership making and selling
clothes from their boutique off Carnaby Street. In 1960 these clothes were
spotted by the fashionable 21 Shop and featured in Vogue. Foale and Tuffin
outfits became widely available in department stores and from the trendy
'Paraphernalia' boutique in New York.
Their most famous customers were the singers Cilla Black and Françoise
Hardy, the TV presenter Cathy McGowan and the actress Susannah York.
