Nehru suit

Grey wool Nehru suit
Designed by Gilbert Feruch, Paris, November 1967
T.318+A-1977

This suit is of chalk-striped grey worsted. The single-breasted jacket is long and slim cut with a Nehru collar. The trousers are tapered and have no turn-up.
Worn for many years by Indian men, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru gave this style of collar international exposure. Pierre Cardin then made the Nehru suit widely fashionable in Europe. As a European fashion it indicated contemporary interest in non-Western clothing.
