Blue check wool
suit
Designed by Tommy Nutter, London, 1966
T.75 to 3-1996
'Everybody
was wearing a narrow suit at the end of the 1960s...so I just went
wild with the lapels and cut them as wide as you possibly could
-enormous- and it was terribly flared at the jacket. So that was
my first look and it was different from anybody else'.
Tommy Nutter 'The Savile
Row Story' 1988
Tommy Nutter was trained in traditional tailoring on Savile Row before
setting up his 'House of Nutter', backed by Cilla Black
and Peter Brown of the Beatles' company Apple. The
business, which opened on Valentine's Day 1969, remained in the
same street, but created a sensation with its bold window
displays and original suits. Nutter's better known customers included
Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton. The Beatles are pictured wearing three of
his suits on the front cover of 'Abbey Road'.
