Hippy outfit, 1968
T.260-1995

This outfit consists of a printed shirt, patched Wranglers jeans, an Indian silk scarf and an embroidered goatskin coat. The coat was brought from Afghanistan in 1968. These coats were originally worn by shepherds and were made from hand embroidered skins.
Many young people were inspired to travel to exotic locations in North Africa, Asia and South America in order to experience different cultures. The Beatles followed this trend when they visited an Indian religious retreat in 1968, in search of spiritual enlightenment.
