Henry VI and Archbishop Chichele
Around 1438-1442
All Souls College, Oxford, was founded by Archbishop Chichele in 1438, with Henry VI as honorary co-founder. Niches in the entrance gate tower held statues of the king and archbishop. The king, then aged 17, wears formal 'robes of estate'. Although the figure is youthful, it was not necessarily meant to be a portrait. The bishop is wearing academic rather than ecclesiastical dress, except for his mitre.
