Vivienne Westwood. 1 April to 11 July 2004
'Watteau' evening dress

This dress is from Les Femmes (S/S 1996). It was inspired by the costume in the paintings of the French painter Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). It is made in green and purple shot-silk faille and taffeta and was worn by the supermodel Linda Evangelista. Westwood thinks of silk taffeta as the most modern of fabrics. Rarely bothering to hang her silk dresses up when travelling, she explains they look marvellous worn straight from the suitcase. The dress was acquired by the V&A in 1996 (T.438:1-1996).
