Seafront Redevelopment

Needing to rebuild its sea defences, the town of Morecambe saw an opportunity for broader redevelopment of the seafront and announced an architectural competition. But nothing could have prepared the council for one of the entries it received.

Birds Portchmouth Russum responded with a scheme based on four colossal constructions fashioned after the local delicacy, Morecambe Bay shrimp. Dotted along a coastal boardwalk, the buildings were to comprise a marina, amusement arcade, theatre and lifeboat station.
