Ellis joined Stickley's Craftsman Workshops as a designer in 1903 and influenced nearly every area of its production, including the Craftsman magazine covers and house designs. His furniture was lighter and more elegant than the firm's earlier work, as seen in the nearby room set. It reflected instead the influence of British designers, including Voysey, Mackintosh and Baillie Scott.
