Munthe was a painter who designed and worked in different media. His tapestries, popular both nationally and abroad, combined traditional weaving techniques and colours with rhythmical compositions and imagery from Nordic folk tales. In 1900 Munthe was described as having 'truly national style in the modern art of Norway'.
