Ashbee considered the study of early English and Continental silver an essential part of a training in metalwork. The design for this cup is a subtle reworking of an English steeple cup of the 1620s that he would have known in the collections of the V&A. Its hammered silver, fluent wirework and enamel drops are typical of his work.
