Lucia Mathews was a talented painter who had studied for a time in Paris. The Furniture Shop, which she founded with her husband, gave her an opportunity to work on a variety of creative projects, including furniture. Here, the bold composition of magnolias against a flat background suggests the influence of Japanese art.
