The Darby family's iron foundry was one of the pioneers of the Industrial Revolution. In 1830 the directors decided to manufacture ornamental domestic furnishings in cast iron.

Dresser believed that it was possible to incorporate some of the qualities of wrought ironwork in cheaper production in cast iron. He designed for the firm from 1867.
