James Couper & Sons, Glasgow

Dresser designed a range of art glass for the industrial glass manufacturer James Couper. It was called 'Clutha', the old name of the River Clyde. The shapes are ancient Roman and Near Eastern, with 'accidental' effects in bubbled and randomly streaked glass and they predate Tiffany's very similar 'Favrile' glass.

The glass was sold through Liberty's in London. It was marked 'DESIGNED by C D REGISTERED', with the Clutha trademark in mock-Celtic script and the lotus-flower trademark of Liberty & Co.
