Linthorpe Art Pottery, Middlesbrough

The Linthorpe pottery was set up in 1879 in Middlesbrough, north–east England. The aim was to use local clay and to provide employment for distressed iron and coal workers. John Harrison, a Darlington businessman, employed Dresser as art director until 1882.

Dresser designed hundreds of shapes. He drew on a wide range of sources, including Japan, Peru, Mexico, Morocco, Fiji, ancient Britain and Cyprus. The pots are impressed with his facsimile signature and the initials 'HT' for Henry Tooth, the pottery manager.
