Erich Mendelsohn

1920

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Mendelsohn visits the Netherlands and sees new Dutch architecture at first hand.

The visit Rotterdam and Amsterdam has a significant influence on Mendelsohn’s work. From this time onwards, the flowing forms of his Expressionism are subdued by a functionalist sensibility, as seen in his Steinberg, Herman & Co. hat factory in Luckenwalde, Germany, completed in 1921.
