V&A Style in Islamic Art Quiz

European or Iranian?

This pen box has a traditional Ottoman form, but the decoration is in done in a technique originally used in Iran to imitate Chinese lacquer. A combination of paint and varnish, it was revived by the Ottomans after 1700. The designs are clearly of European origin, especially the scrollwork, but the roses and the sparkling red ground are typical of contemporary Iranian lacquer.
