Spring Festival on the River No. 7 2000

Spring Festival on the River updates a famous 12th-century scroll painting. The original is attributed to Zhang Zeduan and said to have been commissioned by the Emperor Huizong to depict urban life in the northern Song capital, Bianliang (modern Kaifeng). Now in the Palace Museum in Beijing, it is an iconic early representation of a traditional Chinese city.

By collaging his own photographs of Beijing's current inhabitants onto a 10-metre-long facsimile of the original masterpiece, Hong Hao invites comparisons between the contemporary Chinese and their ancient heritage.
